The smallest gardens can present the biggest design challenges, but a professional designer can work picture-perfect magic.

Paradoxically, the smaller the garden, the more skill is required to come up with a concept that will look good yearround, not to mention year in, year out.

Provided there are a few basics in place - a lawn, some mature trees, a few flower beds - a large garden can often be done piecemeal over a period of time, with the bits you get right distracting from the mistakes. With a small plot there is no room for error and this is where the professional designer can perform miracles.

The easiest way to find the right designer for your needs is to visit the garden shows. This year's spring house and garden show at the RDS in Dublin will have the work of eight leading landscape designers on display.
