GREEN-fingered celebrity gardener Diarmuid Gavin yesterday scooped one of the top awards at the Chelsea Flower Show in London.

The Dubliner, who is synonymous with bold garden makeovers, won a silver gilt award for a 'Teletubbies'-inspired display which cost €100,000 to construct.

Gardener Elma Fenton of Ellen Landscape Designs in Co Kildare - whose garden, according to TV presenter Charlie Dimmock, is one of the top three "must sees" - also won a silver award for her 'Moat and Castle Garden'.

Her winning garden focuses on creating an environmentally sound garden landscape, with sustainability the key to its design. In it, wildflowers mingle with meadowland and a home is created for wild birds and animals. Old apple trees provide maturity while the natural swimming pond, bordered by plants that organically filter the water, provides a focal point.

Speaking after learning of her award, Elma said it was a very nice surprise and would no doubt provide a boost to her profile in Ireland, where she has been in the garden business for 20 years.
