Elma said her garden looked like something people could do themselves at home with a lot of native plants.

She is now hoping a home can be found for the garden in this country, perhaps in the grounds of a hospice or hospital.

The garden, sponsored by An Bord Bia, was one of 19 entries in the Show Gardens category at the Chelsea show, which has attracted over 150,000 visitors and received international TV viewers.

Meanwhile, Diarmuid Gavin's garden is to be transported to Dublin, where it will become the permanent garden to the new Hanover Quay apartment complex in the docklands.

While expensive to construct, it was considerably cheaper than the "lollipop" creation he entered last year, which cost a massive €450,000.

His concept garden includes two circular concrete paths in C shapes, which lead the visitor around the plot and act as a kind of catwalk suspended above the planting. The communal, undulating space is planted almost exclusively with lavender and box hedging.

He said that, rather than being the typically neglected apartment garden that nobody used, it will encourage residents to step outdoors, use the pod rooms and "do a bit of planting, maybe vegetables".

After his latest win, the gardener insisted that medals did not matter to him. "It was grand. It was fine," he said. However, he described the win by Ms Fenton as a really great achievement.
